[The LAS] - Book Review - "Counted Righteous in Christ" by John Piper →

Piper takes great care to emphasise the fundamental importance that we, as Christians, realise that we ARE counted righteous in Christ. Not only did Christ become sin for us that we might be forgiven, but He died and rose so that we might become the righteousness of Christ (2 Cor 5:21). This is fundamental because it shifts out mindset as Christians from the negative- “I am a sinner who has been forgiven”, to one of joy and empowerment: “because Christ is so great and righteous, I am counted righteous in Him; I am a new creation capable of living a new, holy life”!

This doctrine was critical for me, and I discovered it only through discussions with my good friend and brother, who knows who he is.

And make no mistake—saying that we are “counted” righteous and “credited” with righteousness definitely implies that we are righteous. Does God count wrong? Are his credits faulty? Because we are united with Christ, we share in his inheritance, his status, and his life. Game over, sin and guilt.
